Uropathogenic E. coli

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (blue) expressing type 1 pili invade bladder epithelial cells by engaging α3β1 integrin receptors (green) and F-actin (red). Similar interactions may facilitate the uptake of other type 1–piliated bacterial pathogens in diverse niches throughout the host (see Eto et al, e100).
