Short BiographyCharles Chiu, MD / PhD is an assistant professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at UCSF and the director of the UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center, a core facility for the identification of novel viral pathogens associated with acute and chronic illnesses. He is also a board-certified infectious diseases attending physician and a faculty member of the UCSF California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3). Dr. Chiu was an early pioneer in the development of state-of-the-art microarray and deep sequencing technologies for clinical diagnostics and pathogen discovery. He is the PI of K08 and R56 NIH grants in the field of viral diagnostics and a co-investigator in two additional NIH grants, as well as the recipient of a UC Discovery Grant, a Rogers Family Foundation translational research award, and an Abbott Viral Discovery Award. His expertise covers a wide range of subjects, including infectious disease, virology, diagnostic microbiology, metagenomics, and bioinformatics.
